Our Guide of the Best Christmas Cheeses
Choosing the best cheeses for Christmas may not be at the top of your list of priorities right now.
For many of us, 2020 has been a long year as we struggle with all the difficulties of living with Covid-19. Christmas is a time for celebrating, and enjoying food with friends and family remains one of the best ways to do so.
Whether you are looking for food for a Christmas party or even food for a Christmas dinner there’s one item we can help you choose – that’s Cheese.
So we hope this little article makes your life that bit easier this Christmas and from all of us here at the Cheese Society we wish you a merry Christmas.
One way to help ourselves in these times is to boost our immune system so we can remain healthy. Although too much of anything is widely considered to be bad for you, remember that cheese contains potassium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and protein, making cheese far less of a guilty pleasure and more like a great choice.
Looking for food for a Christmas buffet? Our experts have selected their 10 best Christmas cheeses 2020(in no particular order) from our extensive range of British and European cheeses to help you make your Christmas special.
Why not take a look at our range of perfectly curated cheese boxes if you are searching for gift ideas. Cheese boxes make a memorable present and cover all bases for family and friends!
The Best Cheeses for Christmas 2020
1.Double Barrel Lincolnshire Poacher
Double Barrel Lincolnshire Poacher – An aged Lincolnshire Poacher with a full strong mellow flavour. Aged for a minimum of 2 years, this is a cheddar style cheese that really packs a flavour punch. Ideal for those who love their strong flavours and firm cheeses, this is a real firm classic this Christmas. £2.40 per 100g.
2. Morbier au lait cru AOC
Morbier au lait cru AOC – A supple pale ivory coloured mountain cheese made from the raw milk of the morning and evening milkings separated by a layer of wood ash; which is said to aid the digestion.
As the cheese matures it becomes sweeter and stronger with the ageing process.
Try with a fruity Beaujolais wine. £2.80 per 100g
3. Vacherin Mont D’Or
This is a wonderfully, soft, resin scented, seasonal cow’s milk cheese that is eagerly looked forward to enjoy during the colder months of the year. Produced in the mountainous Jura region of France, this cheese is made using the exceptionally sweet milk produced from the famous Montbeliarde cow, which is used during the summer months to make the famous fruity, firm, Comte AOC mountain cheese. £15 Each
4. Brie with Truffle
The flavour has a wonderful aroma of woodland mushrooms and violets. This is a full and fruity raw milk cheese, traditionally made to artisan methods. A soft, unctuous texture and easy yet complex, nutty flavours make this cheese one of our customers’ favourites. The cheeses are dry-salted and allowed to mature or “Affinage” on reed mats, in cool, but not cold conditions, with the greatest care being taken to ensure that the fragile cheeses are brought up to peak condition. A wonderful seasonally available addition to a luxury, gourmet cheeseboard. £10 per 250g

5. Vacherousse d’Argental
Vacherousse d’Argental – Vacherousse d’Argental is a very smooth, creamy French cheese, with a texture of thick clotted cream and has a fresh lively flavour.
The rind of the cheese is first washed with brine and annatto and is then matured for a minimum of 2 weeks, during this time the exterior develops an orange, white mottled mould.
£5.60 Sold as a eighth wedge which is approx. 200g.
Stichelton – A full flavoured and unique Stilton-style, English blue cheese made by Joe Schneider on the Welbeck Estate in Nottinghamshire. Voted Best Blue Cheese for Christmas 2020 in the U.K. Cheese section.
The flavours of this intesely delicious creamy white cheese are nutty and reminiscent of apples with underlying toasty notes. £2.50 per 100g.
7. Mrs Kirkhams Lancashire
Mrs Kirkhams Lancashire – The cheeses’ flavours are sharp and citrusy, with a lingering Lancashire tang. The cheese is usually matured for 2-3 months but can be prolonged for up to 6 months by which time it becomes almost softly spreadable. An excellent melting cheese that progresses to a soft, silky, custard-like texture when cooked. This is lovely grilled on toast.
Generally recognised as one of the BEST LANCASHIRE CHEESES on the market. £2.40 per 100g
8. Comte AOC
Comte AOC – is a smooth, creamy and nutty mountain cheese made from unpasteurised cows milk and is one of the most popular and finest French cheeses. With a good intensity of flavour which improves with ageing (up to 24 months).

Driftwood Goats Log – Driftwood is made by the Whitelake Cheese Company at Bagborough Farm in Pylle Somerset, just off the Glastonbury festival site. Driftwood’s texture is almost mousse like when young but as it matures it becomes rich and creamy. As with the texture the flavours of the cheese change, they start out light and delicate but become fuller as the cheese matures. The cheese has a very distinctive citrus lemon flavour and a vivid ash coated natural rind which adds to the flavour of the cheese as it matures. £10
10. Colston Bassett Stilton PDO
Colston Bassett Stilton – I know it’s obvious but stilton at Christmas just doesn’t get old. A cheese that is undeniably good throughout the year and is always fought over on the cheeseboard on Christmas Day, well in my house anyway. Buttery, mellow and delicious and best on a hot cooked ham or melted over pork pie with fruit chutney. Who are we kidding, everyone loves stilton at Christmas. £2.50 per 100g.
